Apple Devices Could Get Quick Share, Here’s What We Know

After solving the messaging problem between Android and iOS devices with RCS, Google is reportedly working on making file sharing easier across these platforms. This could finally resolve the long-standing problem. Fingers crossed!

According to a report by Android Authority, Google may be working on bringing Quick Share to iOS and macOS. Previously exclusive to Samsung devices, Quick Share is now available for all Android phones. Google merged Nearby Share with Quick Share to enable seamless file sharing across all Android phones and Windows PC.

We all know the struggle of sharing files between Android, iOS, and macOS-it’s a nightmare. To share files, we’re forced to use AirDrop alternatives or other methods that are less-than-seamless.

Quick Share is built on Nearby Connections, which is a peer-to-peer networking API. And its source code is available on GitHub where anyone can track the changes and fixes. Google continues to improve Quick Share according to the regular changes in the source code. The repository is constantly updated, which anyone can track.

A bug with its fix was recently updated in Google’s Nearby repository. The bug was that the system was displaying a non-localized account when showing the device name along with the device type. The resolution was that this is an extra step which is unnecessary as the device name is already localized on iOS and macOS, and the localized name should work correctly for Quick Share.

Since the Quick Share app is not available for iOS or macOS but is mentioned in the latest bug fix, it indicates that Google might be working on the Quick Share for iOS and macOS. As of now, this assumption is based only on the statement in the bug fix comment, so we cannot ignore that Google might be working on something else related to iOS and macOS.

This doesn’t mean we can rule out the first assumption; there is a possibility that Quick Share could come to iOS and macOS. For now, we can only wait for some confirmation or other hints.

If Google is indeed working on Quick Share for Apple device; it will fix one of the big compatibility issues between Android and iOS devices. Recently, Oppo and OnePlus with their latest updates have made it easy to share files with iPhones (but requires a standalone app); Google could do the same by making it possible for all Android phones.

I hope Google makes it possible somehow and makes users happy.
